Located in Nairobi City, Kibera is the largest slum in Kenya.
In 2003 a joint project of NGO groups like African Children Education Fund (ACEF), Kenyan government and EM Research Organization, launched as a long-term clean up project called Kibera Slum Environment Improvement Project. See also Global Cases for Kenya.
In an attempt to tackle sanitary condition problems Activated EM•1® is distributed for free. Toilets' and rubbish odor has been controlled leading to a reduction of mosquitoes and flies.
Also, removing garbage from houses' sewer and spraying with Activated EM•1® converts organic refuse into useful and valuable organic fertilizer for sale generating income.
In order to remove Water Hyacinth (plant native of South Africa) covering an extensive area of water surface in Nairobi Dam, Activated EM•1® is spraying to decompose the organic substances and reduce nutrients that feed water hyacinth.
Moreover, removed water hyacinth is processed using EM™ Bokashi and Activated EM•1® to produce organic compost.
