EM™ in Israel - Report 3

This is the third report on EM™ in Israel prepared by Ms. Solveig Retzlaff of EMRO Germany

EM
presentation at the “Society for Protection of Nature in Israel”

Alice, an eco-green self-sufficient activist, known by many green activists in Jerusalem, organized the EM lecture conducted by Ms. Solveig Retzlaff in the conference room of the “Society for Protection of Nature in Israel”, Jerusalem. About 21 people participated in the lecture. There was a lively discussion while the presentation on how EM™ works and if it is applicable for any field, especially for the recycling of kitchen waste at municipal level.

After the presentation Mr. Asher Maimon demonstrated how to make EM™ bokashi from wheat bran.

Mosinzon High-school, Researching on Home-Gardening

This high-school in Hod-Ha’Sharon makes research on agriculture which can be done by people in their apartments, balconies, walls or roofs.
They also study how to re-use and recycle water.

They test whether tomatoes can grow in bags on the wall or whether it is possible to cultivate plants in triangle-shaped pyramids, made from soil in plastic foils.
This method advantage is that the ground area can multiply in 3 times the number of plants growing comparing to conventional flat bed.

As Israel weather is quite hot and many houses and classrooms have flat roofs, the high-school makes an experiment with plants growing on the roof of 2 classrooms.
They aim to see how much soil that plants need (5-20 cm) and how plantings on the roof can influence to the temperatures in the classrooms.

Another trial at the school grounds are 3 fish tanks which are connected with a circulation pump to beds with hydroponic plants.
So the water keeps clean and the plants get nutrients.

The high-school tries to clean the grey water from the canteen and the classrooms as much as possible before it is disposed to the municipal sewage-system.
So it is first filtered, then it goes through bags with trees and then it flows to terraces filled with different soils and different water-plants.

Some students make an experiment on composting the kitchen waste with EM•1® in 5 composters.
They set up 1 control, 2 treatments with different Activated EM•1® concentrations and 2 treatments with bokashi made with differentEM•1®/molasses concentrations.

There were some differences between the treatments with Activated EM•1® and those with EM™ bokashi:
Almost no flies with EM™ bokashi use while many flies with only Activated EM•1® treatment.
The method of how to make good EM™ compost in a more anaerobic way by using plenty of EM™ bokashi and Activated EM•1® has to be lectured in more details to teachers and students.
Then they will succeed in recycling their canteen waste.
