Learning Opportunities for Professional Development, Teachers Workshops “Using Effective Microorganisms” in Sustainable Projects and Service Learning.
Service Learning and Effective Microorganisms for a “Genki” (vital, healthy) Hawaii
EM HAWAII has been leading educational workshop for groups and individuals as part of its activities since 1997. Since 2005, through a collaboration with the State Department of Education’s Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support, Environmental Education and Service Learning specialist we have had the opportunity to present “Effective Microorganisms” and Service Learning Workshops to educators. At these hands on workshops, teachers learn the properties of Effective Microorganisms mixtures and become aware of potential uses of EM™ to address environmental problems in Hawaii, in student sustainability projects, gardening and recycling solid food waste. They make and take home EM™ Bokashi and various EM solutions to begin their own investigations. Some of the comments from past educators after taking the workshop.

Due to the enthusiastic response by educators in these workshops, we were also invited to present Effective Microorganisms and Service Learning to the Annual State Wide Service Learning Conference for students. At this conference students discover variety of ways to impact their school and community with Service Learning projects. Many thanks to Colleen Murakami, environmental education specialist, Mary Ann Kobayashi, Susan Aono, Linda Uehara and others who have shared their passion and experience as educators to introduce Effective Microorganisms.

Holistic Veterinary Center using EM Technology®
Kapa’au Veterinary Center is a privately owned veterinary hospital located in North Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii. They have been providing Complimentary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine for the animals of Hawaii since 1998.
According to Dr. Robin Woodley, DVM they use EM at their practice in various ways. Since many of her patients eat a devitalized, processed diet. She uses Pro EM•1® with chronically ill patients. Pro EM•1® has been developed by EMRO USA and marketed for human consumption as a daily probiotic supplement. Dr. Woodley explains that it is very important to get their digestion working and have good microorganisms in her patients with the Pro EM•1®. As a result, many of the pet owners start using Pro EM•1® themselves when they see the benefits with their pets.
Kapa’au Veterinary Center also sells dehydrated liver treats for dogs that are fermented with EM™. It’s a great way to get some organ meat and EM™ into them on a regular basis.
The hospital also use EM•1® to prevent rusting and to decontaminate all their surgical instruments, before autoclaving. The staff spray the floors weekly with EM•1® solution, both to reduce pathogens, and to contribute to a calm and peaceful environment that the organisms create. They even offer EM Ceramics treated water to their clients and staff.
