EM CASE STUDIES

From Waste to Organic Fertilizer

Bali, Indonesia, faces significant waste management challenges due to growing tourism. The local government’s 3R (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle) system, launched in August 2021, involves community participation in sorting waste and using EM Technology at the “TPS 3R” station to convert household waste into organic fertilizer. This initiative not only addresses waste issues but also promotes sustainable agricultural practices, preserving Bali’s natural beauty and supporting its economy.

Overview

With the growth of tourism in Bali, Indonesia, waste management has become a serious issue. To address this, the local government has implemented the 3R (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle) system, which involves community participation in sorting waste and reducing environmental impact. Household waste is processed into organic fertilizer at the waste processing station known as “TPS 3R” using EM Technology. This system was launched in August 2021.

Problems

Improper waste management has a negative impact on tourism and ultimately the economy of Bali.

EM Application

Waste is sorted into organic and non-organic categories. Some of the household waste, previously sorted by each family, is transported to TPS 3R for composting. The composting process includes:
1. Shredding and EM Treatment: Organic waste is shredded and sprayed with EM product (*EM4) to accelerate fermentation.
2. Aerobic Fermentation: Waste is stacked into large piles for fermentation.
3. Temperature and Humidity Control: Compost is turned and watered when temperature is below 60°C and humidity is below 60%. This continues for approximately 28 days until the compost is stable (30°-40°C and 25-30% humidity).
4. Packaging: The finished compost is packaged and sold as Bokashi Organic Fertilizer for Horticulture.

Effects and Results

– Production of organic fertilizer that improves soil and plant fertility.
– Environmental pollution has reduced and cleanliness maintained.
