The floods which occurred in July 2011, in Thailand continued for more than three months and resulted in a total of 446 deaths and approximately 2.3 million affected people.
It has been described as ”the worst flooding yet in terms of the volume of floodwater and the number of victims”.
The Royal Thai Army has been proactively using EM for almost 20 years to improve people’s living environment and regional development based on the Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy that the King of Thailand advocates.

As the sewage problems reached critical levels, the Prime Minister appointed Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Defense, and The Royal Thai Army as central organizations to solve the serious problems.

Our partner, EMRO Asia, joined also the project to supply EM materials and provide with technical instructions.

Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Defense, and Royal Thai Army Forces decided to use EM Technology to combat the floods effects.
In doing this, they supply 10 to 20 tons per day of Activated EM・1 (AEM) to citizens at several places.
A total of 2,280 tons of AEM and over 100,000 of EM Mudballs were applied throughout the 14 central provinces.

The governement and the army forces not only made efforts in supply EM materials, but also hand in leaflets explaining how to use the AEM and organize lectures to promote the use of EM materials overall the community.

Moreover, to analyze the effect of EM, the government measured the water quality by DO (dissolved oxygen) before and after EM treatment.

The DO of floodwaters in the area of landfills (48,000 m2) in Bang Rakam District increased from 0.6 mg/l to 4.0 mg/l during 12 days of EM treatment. Also, DO in the landfills (14,400m2) in Maha Rat District increased from 3.1 mg/l to 4.5 mg/l during seven days, an evidence for improvement of water quality.

Furthermore, in the residential area of Lat Krabang District in Bangkok, the increase of DO was from 0.5 mg/l to 2.0 mg/l.
Residents referred also to the effect of odor control and the reduction of mosquitoes.
No reports have so far been made regarding the epidemic mediated by insects and bacteria, although its occurrence was much concerned at the beginning of flooding.
